Boynton's two top appointees face the commission Tuesday, with Pirate Fest set for Halloween weekend
Also: a Whitfield town hall tonight, a fatal deputy shooting on Jog Road, missed trash pickups near Lyons Road, and weekly job help at the library.
Boynton's city manager and city attorney have each been through three annual reviews, and the fourth arrives Oct. 20 at City Hall. It is the commission's yearly chance to say how its two top appointees are doing.
The five-member commission will review the two officials who report directly to it at a meeting set for Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. City Manager Daniel Dugger and City Attorney Shawna Lamb each face a fourth evaluation. The session is in the Commission Chambers at City Hall, 100 E. Ocean Ave. Lamb's office will also present its year-end report for fiscal 2025-26. Neither review is optional. Dugger's agreement requires one at least once a year, and Lamb's letter of employment calls for hers. The agenda item covers the reviews themselves and lists no pay or contract changes.
Later in the month, Pirate Fest takes over downtown for Halloween weekend: Saturday, Oct. 31, noon to 10 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 1, noon to 6 p.m. The festival is free.

Robbery suspect killed by deputy after chase and standoff that ended on Jog Road
The man a sheriff's deputy shot and killed Tuesday afternoon on Jog Road, in western Boynton Beach, was Gregory Dobkins, 54, of West Palm Beach. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said it began Monday night, when Dobkins allegedly ordered a pizza to a Lake Worth address, asked the delivery driver for change, then grabbed him and took the money after a struggle. Investigators said he left in a black pickup, which deputies found in Lake Park at about 11 a.m. Tuesday. He fled south on I-95, with a sheriff's helicopter overhead, until his truck crashed on Jog Road and a standoff followed.
According to Bradshaw, something like a shirt or cloth was wrapped around Dobkins's right hand, and the helicopter crew said, "Looks like he's got a gun." Deputies tried less-than-lethal weapons several times without success. Bradshaw said Dobkins then ducked behind a concrete pole, knelt and raised his hands "in the shooting position," and the deputy fired. Authorities later determined he had no weapon.
New trash haulers miss pickups in suburban Boynton communities
New haulers took over Solid Waste Authority trash routes on Oct. 1, and the switch has been bumpy west of town. Several Valencia communities along Lyons Road reported missed collections, the Palm Beach Post found, and Colony Preserve, west of Boynton Beach, got flyers listing two different pickup days. The seven-year contracts cover more than 200,000 curbside homes, a bit over a quarter of the county's housing. Willie Puz, a spokesperson for the Solid Waste Authority, said a corrected flyer went out once the agency learned of the mix-up, and that hauler performance has steadily improved as complaints have dropped in recent days. To report a missed pickup, call the authority's Customer Information Services line at 561-697-2700.
