Neighbors take on the police shooting range
Neighbors push back on a police range, the city posts a $353.6 million budget, and Bagel Boss opens.
One argument is loud enough this week to drown out everything else, and it involves a proposed police shooting range next to houses. Elsewhere: two openings, a big budget number, and a Tuesday meeting worth reading ahead of time.
Boynton Beach has paused work on a proposed police training site near Golf View Harbour. The roughly eight-acre plan included a 12-lane shooting range. Neighbors raised concerns about noise, wildlife and losing trees that buffer their homes from Interstate 95 and nearby train tracks. Residents said they support modern police training but oppose this site. The commission had first voted to spend up to $478,000 on a survey, design work and cost estimates. On Aug. 11, commissioners voted to pause the project and bring back separate talks about this parcel and another city-owned property. More than 100 people attended a neighborhood meeting held with about one day's notice, WPEC reports. The commission is expected to revisit the land at its first September meeting. Until then, the training proposal and the future use of the wooded parcel remain open.
Bagel Boss opens Aug. 21 beside KC Market
Bagel Boss holds its Boynton Beach grand opening Friday, Aug. 21. The shop is in Village Square at Golf, 3775 Woolbright Road, beside KC Market. The menu includes kettle-style bagels, cream cheese and appetizing spreads, deli sandwiches, salads, egg plates, coffee and baked goods. Catering platters are also available. The dairy shop is cholov yisroel and pas yisroel under Orthodox Rabbinical Board supervision. It closes for Shabbat, so Friday service will run from the morning into early afternoon. This is the chain's newest Florida shop after locations in Aventura, Miami Beach, Surfside, Boca Raton and the David Posnack JCC in Davie. Opening day may be busy, but the address and Friday timing are firm enough to plan around.
Pei Wei adds a Boynton location
Pei Wei Asian Kitchen has announced a Boynton Beach location at 7375 Boynton Beach Boulevard, Suite 415. The chain's own location page labels the restaurant as upcoming and lists 561-916-6482. It does not yet post store hours or a firm opening date. The page says the site is planned for dine-in, takeout, delivery and catering. It also previews chain staples such as Orange Chicken, Mongolian Steak, fried rice, lo mein and lettuce wraps. For now, this is an announced address rather than a place to visit today. The firm details are the suite and phone number; opening day still needs an update from the company.
Somebody asked for the opposition emails
Vice Mayor Thomas Turkin filed two public-records requests on Aug. 7 tied to the proposed police training site. WPEC says the requests seek messages between Commissioner Angela Cruz and Golf View Harbour residents, plus messages between Cruz and reporters covering the project. Turkin said he wanted to review what had been shared and check its accuracy. He said the requests were routine and not meant to intimidate residents. One resident told WPEC that learning the messages had been requested felt unsettling. The records question is now part of the larger range dispute. Communications with elected officials may become public records, and this request puts that fact in view while the city reconsiders the site.
A $353.6 million budget, and the rate holds
The city's proposed budget for FY 2026-27 totals $353,602,581 across all funds. The General Fund share is $139,153,831. The proposed millage rate is 7.7500, unchanged from FY 2025-26. An unchanged rate does not automatically mean an unchanged bill. Your bill still tracks your property's taxable value. Citywide, gross taxable value is listed at $11,012,163,504, with budgeted net property tax revenue of $82,407,218. The first public hearing is September 3 at 6 p.m. That is where the numbers get defended out loud and residents get the microphone. If you plan to say something about taxes this year, hold that date.
Tuesday's commission agenda is already posted
The Boynton Beach City Commission meets Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. The meeting is at 100 E. Ocean Avenue. The shooting-range property is expected to return at the first commission meeting in September, not on Aug. 25. The proposed city budget has its own public hearing on Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. Those are three separate dates: Aug. 25 for the regular commission session, the first September meeting for the range property, and Sept. 3 for the budget hearing.
